New “New Xbox Experience” now with 100% more photos

Earlier this year at E3, the video gaming trade show, Microsoft announced a new and updated version of the Xbox software that would heavily overhaul the tired and cumbersome interface and provide a new experience. Appropriate then that they call in the New Xbox Experience (NXE). The new software will be automatically downloaded for all Xbox owners on November 19th, but last weekend I heard that Microsoft were running a preview program to allow a couple thousand selected owners to receive the update early and allow them to play around with the software before official launch. I signed up and was luckily picked from the, I would imagine, huge list of applicants.

I got the update tonight and decided for the benefit of my fellow Xbox owners (and of course to make them jealous!) to upload a few photos and first impressions.

The update itself only took 2 or 3 minutes to update and then after a restart it was complete.

The first step is to create a Avatar. This is brand new to Xbox and obviously is heavily influenced by the Wii. The interface to customizing your avatar is really simple and pretty comprehensive. You can create and save wardrobes and you can bet special outfits will be available to download in the future (Halo Spartan armor anyone?). The whole avatar concept might seem a bit silly, but it does make the interface a little more fun and personalized. You can also see your friends avatars in the new 3D friends list.

The actual dashboard itself is much cleaner, easier and most importantly faster! moving up and down switches between menus such as “My Xbox”, “Video”, “Friends”, “Marketplace” etc. Moving left and right in each of these menus gives you more specific options. It feels a lot more instinctive and much easier to find the options you want.

Now we come to the cherry on top. The major new feature of this update, is the ability to watch your Netflix movies over the internet. This is a huge bonus if you are a Netflix subscriber and probably a good reason to become one if you’re not. Netflix has for a while offered the ability to watch movies on your computer, but this new feature allows you to easily watch your movies on your TV. Setting up couldn’t be simpler. A code appears on your screen, that you enter on the Netflix webpage. That’s it! After a couple of seconds, your queue appears in 3D on your screen. Not every movie from Netflix is available to stream, I think currently they have library of around 12,000 titles, but this will grow. The movies that appear on your Xbox are just those from your queue that are available to stream. Coming soon are HD movies! Once you select a movie to watch, it determines your internet connection speed and starts playing. This took around 10 seconds for me. The quality is definitely sub DVD, probably around the same as SD television, but again I am sure this will improve with time. Skipping ahead in the movie forces the stream to buffer and this only takes 3 or 4 seconds. Overall a very impression feature and even more impressive when you consider that this is all free with your standard Netflix subscription.

Lastly is the new screen that comes up when you hit the Xbox button on the controller. Again this is much easier to use and has several option that allow you to access features without exiting the game or movie and going back to the dashboard. One of the cool new features here is “Party” mode allowing you to invite friends into a party and move from game to game and stay together, This is a cool feature as those who play a lot of online games with friends will testify, it can be annoying when you get disconnected and separated!

Overall this is definitely a welcome refresh of the Xbox and addresses a lot of the issues and improves the experience. I’m sure that this will help to keep the Xbox fresh and competitive!

Photoswap, the new evil threatening our children

Tonight I am putting my “International Technology Expert” hat on and doing a segment on the internet radio show The Sports Hole at the request of my friend Gregg Sandheinrich. I’ll be talking about one of the applications for the iPhone, Photoswap, which allows you to take anonymous photos on your phone and swap them with complete strangers. Great in theory, scary in reality as you’re about to see.  If you heard the show and have come looking for some sample photos look no further. If you are just a regular visitor to my site or my mother then sorry about the following.. Photos after the jump.

UPDATE: The podcast of the show is now online, click here, my bit is at the 19 minute mark

The new hotness…

So, in an never ending mission to make my website bigger and better, I’ve implemented (work speak!) a new sub site of milestonkin.com. It’s an idea I’ve had for a while but was never able to do, because I didn’t have the tools. The site is a new photojournal blog, where I will only be uploading photos along with short captions. The idea is that I take one photo every day and post it online to this blog. After a while, the site will start to resemble a journal of sorts, documenting my daily life. This differs from the gallery in that it is based more on a timeline and isn’t just a huge collection of photos from a specfic event!

“What will the photos be of Miles?”, I hear you ask. Well, to be honest I’m not really sure. For the most part it would be cool if they could represent my daily life, but of course that could really be anything and many days the subject might not be that exciting. Exciting or not though, I think it’s importrant to keep doing it on a regular basis so as to form a complete series. Of course as with anything, there will be days where I forget, but I will attempt to catch up if I do.

The address for the site is http://photojournal.milestonkin.com but it can also be accesed directly from the new link in the right of the header of this site (my blog if you are reading this via RSS).

The tool in question that now allows me to do this is my new iPhone, and yes it is that cool and then some, but that’s the subject of a seperate post! The point is that with it’s built in camera and ability to publish directly to the web, I can be anywhere and take a photo and put it online immeditely!

I started posting photos on Monday, the day I picked up my iPhone so there are already some pictures there, go check it out!

Oh Technology! Why do I love thee so?!

Rickrolled…

Many of you are no doubt familair with the phenomenon of rickrolling. This is the act of tricking someone into listening to that classic Stock Aitkin & Waterman act of the late 80’s and in particular his seminal hit, “Never gonna give you up”. This phenomenon has become so big that entire sports arenas have been rickrolled and now whenever I receive a link in an email or by instant messenger, I actually take a moment to consider whether or not I am about to be on the busines end of a rickrolling.

Earlier today, I recieved a voicemail on my phone from my friend Gregg. What the message did was take the act of rickrolling to a whole new level, both technologically and artistically.

Never before has someone gone to the trouble of performing the hit themselves to achieve these results. Bravo Sir, bravo!

(Sorry about the quality, it did come via phone!)
